Welcome to the Math Department at Hendricks!

Our math department is more than a place to learn math; it is a place to grow in confidence and belonging.

Our Hendricks team creates a rigorous and engaging curriculum for all students.  We will connect to real-world experiences and encourage students to “PLAY” with math, including hands-on activities and reflective math discourse.

Hendricks Middle School is committed to creating an environment to support and grow confident learners at all levels.

    Within Forsyth County Schools Mathematics:

Beginning in grade 6, there are various course sequences (e.g., support, standard, accelerated, etc.). Parents, please know that some name changes occured for courses! For a tabular view of these sequences:

Teachers follow the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Mathematics as well as county guidelines.

    HENDRICKS MATH COURSE OFFERINGS

Each course is taught to meet and challenge students with the required grade level standards.

    SIXTH GRADE COURSES:

Sixth Grade Math: In this course, students master the 6th Grade Standards.

Advanced 6th Grade Math: In this course, students master all of the 6th grade standards and some specifically chosen 7th grade standards. In addition to the standards required for this course, students in these classes will master the 7th grade Rational Numbers unit.

Accelerated 6th Grade Math*: In this course, students master all of the 6th standards and the first semester of the 7th Grade standards.

All sixth grade mathematicians will need a TI-30XS MultiView Scientific Calculator.

    Josie Toney - jtoney@forsyth.k12.ga.us

    Jennifer McDeermond - f33567@forsyth.k12.ga.us

    SEVENTH GRADE COURSES:

Seventh Grade Math: In this course, students master the 7th Grade Math Standards.

Advanced 7th grade Math: In this course, students master all of the 7th grade standards and some specifically chosen 8th grade standards. In addition to the standards required for this course, students in these classes will master the 8th grade Exponent, Scientific Notation, and Linear Equation standards.

Accelerated 7th Grade Math*: In this course, students master the second half of 7th grade standards and all of the 8th grade standards.

All seventh grade mathematicians will need a TI-30XS MultiView Scientific Calculator.

    Emily Misencik - f45097@forsyth.k12.ga.us

    Eryn Brown - elbrown@forsyth.k12.ga.us

    Shannon Tosi - f43558@forsyth.k12.ga.us

    EIGHTH GRADE COURSES

Eight Grade Math: In this course, students master the 8th grade standards.

Algebra: Concepts and Connections*:  In this course, students master any 8th grade standards not already covered that are necessary for success in Algebra I.  Students also learn all Algebra I content in-depth as well as additional material above and beyond the Algebra I standards.   The expected path for these students is to take Geometry: Concepts and Connections or Honors Geometry: Concepts and Connections as freshmen. A few high achieving and very motivated students may elect to take both Honors Geometry and Honors Algebra II as freshmen.

Accelerated Algebra/Geometry A: Concepts and Connections: In this course, students master all of the Algebra I standards as well as the first semester of Honors Geometry Standards.  The expected path for these students is to take Accelerated Geometry B/Advanced Algebra: Concepts and Connections as freshmen.

All eighth grade mathematicians will need a TI-30XS MultiView Scientific Calculator (same calculator as 7th grade).

    *Accelerated Placement Qualifications

Due to the sequential nature of mathematics and the rigor and pace of the program, students must meet certain qualifications in order to be placed in an accelerated math class.

    Rising 6th Grade Students:

Fifth grade students who will attend Hendricks will first be identified by their 5th grade teachers as having strong aptitude for math. These students will then be offered the opportunity to take a placement test in the spring of their 5th grade year.  Students that are coming from another school outside Forsyth county can contact Hendricks administration to schedule an opportunity to take the placement test in the summer before their 6th grade year.

Rising 7th and 8th Grade Students:

Students who have not taken an accelerated math course in 6th or 7th grades will only be considered for placement in accelerated math for the next school year at teacher recommendation.  A summer bridge course is also strongly recommended for those students who teachers feel need the additional challenge of the accelerated course.
